Founded in 1978 through a collaboration between the Massachusetts Department of Food & Agriculture [now Agricultural Resources], the University of Massachusetts at Amherst Extension Service, and farmers from across the state. Founding members were at the forefront of the renaissance in consumer, farmer, and community interest for farmers markets. Industry leaders understood that this revitalized interest needed more than city, state, and federal funding in order to be sustainable.
Mass Farmers Markets (MFM) emerged out of the essential need to create a central organization to assure a vibrant future for this industry. Through over 40 years of work, experience and challenges, MFM continues to help implement and sustain farmers markets; be the go-to organization for support of current and future farmers markets; and the go-to organization for market manager training.
Today, MFM remains the only organization working across the Commonwealth on behalf of farmers markets, the communities in which they are located, and the farmers who rely on them as a crucial source of income.
